Founded in 1978, The Birth Center is the first licensed birth center in Pennsylvania and the oldest continually operational birth center in the United States, with certified nurse midwifes providing compassionate health care services to a community of women.

Our services, offered to women and families in the Philadelphia region, include holistic gynecologic care, out-of-hospital maternity care, and educational services such as childbirth seminars and breastfeeding support groups. |
Our professional team of certified nurse midwives, nurse practitioners and registered nurses provides our clients a midwifery model of women’s health care that is safe, evidence-based, satisfying, and personalized. Our providers believe that when a woman and her family are supported and involved in making decisions about their care, they are best equipped to meet the challenges of parenthood and life. Our core philosophy is focused on a lifetime relationship between a woman and her caregiver that does not start or end at pregnancy – our focus is on the importance of women’s health care throughout life.
With a strong commitment to education and sharing our model of care with students and other medical professionals, we have been a teaching site for nurse-midwifery students as well as for undergraduate nursing students and OB/GYN residents from local universities.
We value the relationship between client and caregiver, offering full thirty minutes or more for appointments, offering individualized attention to each woman’s needs. Our philosophy of care empowers a community of women and families to be active participants in the health care process. |
